Concrete Pavilion

The designed pavilion has a geometry that can adapt to different urban spaces and has the power to transform itself and its environment. It gives a chance to spontaneous gathering and activities. Curvilinear surfaces establish a direct relationship with the user on a scale that we are not used to seeing in the built environment and form an urban meeting point. Geometries made of movable panels can be adapted and adapted to different urban situations. It is possible to create many different configurations with the three panels designed.

The selected area in the park in front of the Firuz Ağa Mosque and behind the Sultanahmet tram stop, which is used as the Mehmet Akif Ersoy Park today. The park has been used as a passage area rather than a parking function. While it is possible to see the remains of some walls of the Byzantine hippodrome under the ground cover of the park, the necessary awareness by people is not given. It is believed that a novel wall design will increase the bond with the historical background and create a new urban meeting point.

The design of the pavilion has a geometry that gives a chance to spontaneous gathering and activities. Curvilinear surfaces establish a direct relationship with the user on a scale that we are not used to seeing in the built environment and form an urban meeting point. It can be adapted to different locations and conditions, both in terms of the program and contextual relationships. Open and semi-open spaces of different sizes can be obtained with panels. The curved surfaces in the proposed pavilion were created by the combination of 3 different panels, panel A, panel B, and panel C in different ways.

The panels are 30cm wide and 450cm high and have different curvatures. As long as one edge of Panel A joins the edge of Panel B and the other edge of Panel C‘, the panels can also be used at 90 degrees at opposite angles. The surface formed by the combination of at least 3 panels is self-supporting, but it is locked with a steel sheet that acts as a beam on top to prevent it from moving apart from each other. In the upper and lower parts of the panels, there are grooves of 5cm by 30cm that provide beam location in direction changes. After the panels are moved with a crane and placed in the correct places, the sheet that acts as a beam is passed over the top and locked. If the steel sheet is removed, the panels can be moved individually by crane and taken to another location.

The exhibition is carried by a grid system of thin steel rails. End parts of the steel rails are magnetic and hold at the points where they coincide with the steel sheet fastener that locks the panels. The exhibition elements are carried by cylindrical steel cables and according to the dimensions of the element to be exhibited, these cables can be brought into the desired position on the u-section steel rails.
